Cruel America

.
Cruel America by Jonathan Schell
This article "appeared" in the October 17, 2011 edition of The Nation.

Mr. Schell talked about Gov. Perry, the death penalty, Republicans and other cruel people, Iraq, Bush and Cheney, and torture.

He criticized Obama too - for not holding Bush and company accountable for their crimes.

Funny though, he apparently hasn't heard about Obama's assassination of American Citizen Awlaki.

  1. Funny how everyone has their own concept of cruel. Some would call a partial birth abortion cruel, others would not. Some would be happy to execute a convicted child molester but adamantly opposed to executing a serial murderer. Still others would advocate shorter time limits for unemployment benefits in spite of cruelty accusations.

Mr. Schell states that America today is more cruel that the America of the past. That’s absurd. I know of no hanging judges, orphan trains, prison sentences of 30 years on the rock pile, or young pregnant girls being excommunicated from their church.

I suppose that I would insist that any discussion of cruel has to be tempered with a nod to the world as it really is (non Utopian) and not as we wish it to be. In summary I simply decline to accept Mr. Schell label of “Cruel America”.
