Race 8 - Discrimination

We have for 50 years been attempting to solve the problem of discrimination against minorities by having the government enforce discrimination in favor of minorities.

One can argue the ethics of this approach or the results obtained by it, but doesn’t reason suggest that after half a century we should be in one or the other of the following places?

A            It was successful and we are about done with it.

Or

B            It was not successful and we need to be done with it.

"The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race."  Chief Justice John Roberts, 2007

  1. Agreed without reservation.

On a previous post I offered a definition of racist/racism simply based on making race based decisions. In my definition, whether a decision was or would have a positive or negative impact on the target race is irrelevant in determining whether the decision or action is racist.

I think that concept is important here. The fact that Affirmative Action was a positive program for African Americans (and I believe America in general) does not change the fact that it was a race based (racist program) implemented by the Federal government.

I can easily infer from Chief Justice Roberts’ comment that any racist (my definition) decision/act is deleterious to the goal of eliminating racism. I would agree.
