A physicist represents the scientific link between the operational perspective of an engineer and the theoretical inclination of the mathematician. This is illustrated by the following story (which makes fun of mathematicians, if not all three) that I have heard for as long as I have been in mathematics.
An engineer, a physicist, and a mathematician each notices (in separate places) a fire.
The engineer immediately runs a large bucket of water and pours it on the fire extinguishing it completely.
The physicist examines the fire, does some calculations, measures a precise amount of water, and pours it on the fire extinguishing it without a drop to spare.
The mathematician looks at the fire and says, "There exists a solution." and walks on.

Another Geek joke
ReplyDeleteA Traffic Engineer, A Computer Programmer, and a Garbage Truck Driver were asked how they would propose finding the most efficient routes for the city’s garbage collection trucks.
The Traffic Engineer suggested a 1 year traffic flow study followed by 6 months analysis of the findings, followed by proposed solutions
The Computer Programmer suggested a 1-2 year effort to development software that would dynamically calculate routes based on time of day, length of the route, past volumes of collections, and other variables.
The Garbage Truck driver suggested putting 3 men on a truck and telling them they could go home when they were done.
